Griffin House

Description

Enerals Griffin was born in Delaware in 1784, and was believed to be a runaway slave from Virginia. He purchased 50 acres of the surrounding property from George Hogeboom in 1830.

He married his wife, Priscilla, upon his arrival in Ancaster in 1833. James Griffin (1833-1917), their only known child, became a well known veterinarian in the area. Enerals died in 1878 and the property remained in the ownership of the Griffin family until 1988, when Hamilton Conservation Authority purchased it, preserving the house as a museum.
